The Road to Someplace - Part 3
This wasn’t how the story was supposed to go… Kit was sure of it as she climbed E’s bookshelf, stopping as she reached the older Pleasant Company and Pre-Beforever books proudly displayed in chronological order.
She pulled out “Meet Kit” and made herself comfortable on the short stories. Kit could quote her character book series, she was so familiar with it.
Most of her siblings were just as familiar with their own stories as Kit was with hers. It was an extremely well-written book, but Kit always wondered just how she was so different in personality than book Kit. Well, maybe she wasn’t entirely different, after all, book Kit was 9 years old during the Great Depression in the series. Some things were the same, she thought, just as many more things were different. She thought back to writing class. Kit was definitely feeling guilty by now for avoiding the topic for so long, but maybe if she were able to scheme like Molly, or able to get away with things like Courtney, or even cute like Stella, she wouldn’t feel so scared to bring it up. (Stella and Molly often got away with things with those qualities, and there’s just something about Courtney that grants her the power to do so as well.)
No, Kit was the stuck-in-the-middle writer who everyone expected to have a way with words. And who was she to tell them that the words only flow out on paper? Kit sighed. The all out honest truth was, writing class had been awesome. In fact, she had even made a new friend: Ruthie Smithens. Maybe Kit should have predicted that her and Ruthie would be fast friends, but Kit had never paid too much mind to Ruthie in the book. No, book Ruthie and writing class Ruthie were different, just like Kit was different from book Kit. This Ruthie was into writing—- and something else Kit just couldn’t put her finger on. Older, bolder, wiser, maybe. And more than anything, Kit wanted Ruthie to join the Just Dolling Family. And that was the problem. Kit was the usually content, never ask for anything kind of doll. She just couldn’t break that expectation that she had placed upon herself. No one cared, she knew that no one cared if she spoke up for once or asked for something, but maybe something inside of her thought it mattered enough to keep her from asking for just one thing.
“You better get used to it, Kit. Life’s not like books. There’s no bad guy, and sometimes there’s no happily ever after, either,” Kit read in her book. How rude! It was like Charlie was speaking to her, not book Kit.
“Well, thanks for nothing,” she said to the book, slipping it back into the shelf. Maybe Kit would just have to go and make her own happily ever after.

Emily was supposed to leave the next day. For Molly, it had been the best week ever, and she mourned over the fact that it would soon be over. Emily had one last surprise up her sleeve, however—- A surprise ever greater than her incredible hide and seek skills.
“Molly,” she started, “your siblings and I wanted to surprise you, and it’s already been agreed to, so hopefully you’re not tired of me, but I’m your new sister!”
Molly looked at Emily flabbergasted. “How in tarnation did you pull that off without me finding out? I’m terrible with surprises!”
Emily laughed. “Well, my old girl didn’t want me anymore, and E found me, and we decided to pretend that I was coming over for your birthday. It was an elaborate plan. I’m not sure how you didn’t think of it yourself as a way to get me to stay.”
The two dolls scooped themselves a larger-than-should-be-ok serving of ice cream. Somewhere in the living room, Courtney and Logan faced each other on Mario Kart, while Maryellen sat off to the side, mumbling something about the Loch Ness Monster. Everyone seemed to be minding their own business. So much so, that no one noticed two dolls slip into the house—- Kit and Ruthie.
“We have a new sister!” Kit announced to mainly herself. Then, turning to Ruthie: “Welcome to someplace!”
It was a normal Saturday, just like where our story began. But then again, even perfectly normal days have something not-so-routine about them.

Uh, hi guys. Writing is hard, let me tell you that. I think this is the finale? I honestly I might decide to do more, but probably not? I don’t know, but anyway, this is the time of year where I get A LOT of dolls because it’s easy to make money in the summer, so likely I won’t be doing introductory photostories for any dolls this summer. I mean, they’ll have posts to introduce them, but nothing on 37 ways to start fire or the road to someplace scale. I have a couple projects I’ve been working on, and I’m excited to finally show you guys! Look out for a possible second post this week. Maybe even a possible third??… I better not promise anything, though! I’ve been sick this weekend, so we’ll see where that goes as far as extra posts. And yeah, I got Ruthie and Emily! I’ve been wanting Ruthie the most out of the historical characters I didn’t have, so I can’t wait for you guys to see more of her personality!
I think that’s it? Have a great week and remember to eat your veggies! Bye! <3
What a sneaky way to introduce not one, but TWO new dolls to the family! As I always say, “it never hurts to ask!”
ReplyDeleteWriting is hard! But, you keep us on the edge of our seats and make reading so much fun. I can’t wait for more adventures and more witty shenanigans.
Until then, I’ll be filling up on my veggies! Sounds like you better get some Vitamin C, too!
Thank you!
DeleteOoh, extra posts! I definitely did NOT see Ruthie coming, but she is adorable!
ReplyDeleteAck, I was sick this weekend, too! I hope you feel better!
Hehe, maybe I shouldn’t make any promises, but there are extra posts in the works.
DeleteI know, I did not hint to Ruthie AT ALL. 😠She’s been on my list for quite a while now, and like I said, I really can’t wait to introduce her personality! I’ve been working on it for a while.
Ugh, I think something’s been going around! No fun!
It's so fascinating how we humans imagine our dolls. You separate the book character from the doll character so you can make the doll your own. I find that so interesting. You said writing is hard, and it is, or can be! When you make a story, do you have the whole story plot already in your head or make it up as you go along in "fizzes" - quote from Matilda.
ReplyDeleteIt really is fascinating how we imagine our dolls. Everyone could have the same doll, but never “the same doll,” if you get what I mean! Maybe I should do a post about how I come up with my doll’s personalities? I’ve never seen anyone else do it the same way.
DeleteI totally wrote that writing is hard after hours of working on this, but it a lot of times comes with a rewarding feeling. I think for me I know some of the plot and the rest comes in fizzes as I go!
Writing IS hard, but so totally worth it! You've done a great job here! I really didn't expect two dolls! And also, that pic of Kit tucked into the bookshelf with her nose in a book is just perfect. Looking forward to reading more about Ruthie and Emily!
ReplyDeleteAlso, a writing tip someone told me that might help you: "We're not good first-drafters, we're good writers". It's helpful to remember that it doesn't have to be perfect from the beginning :)

Ah, thank you! Well, I always have to keep my readers expecting the unexpected. >:) I’m super excited to have Emily and Ruthie, especially since I’ve been working on Ruthie’s personality for what feels like FOREVER! That’s a great tip. :)
