This Didn't Go How I Expected...
Hey guys! What's up? Today I have a little bit of a different type of post. This is going to be a bit of a behind the scenes of a recent restoration/customization I did. It was originally going to be a tutorial for fixing up a doll, but I took these pictures so long ago that I no longer remember the exact details of the project. Instead, it's just basically snarky commentary. I found this doll at a flea market (in March 2023!) for $10, and I just couldn't pass it up! I was originally going to sell the doll, but after holding on to it for a while, I decided to make a new boy doll! I've honestly been on quite the custom doll kick lately, and I just felt like the boy dolls in my collection are terribly outnumbered. So, I hope you guys enjoy seeing this chaos.
This was a Grace doll that, as you can see, desperately needed some TLC.
Like I said, this was supposed to be a bit of a master post for doll restoration, but now I'm just going through the photos and commenting on them. The biggest thing I did was taking off the (highlighter?) marks. I used the popular Benzoyl Peroxide treatment, which you should be able to find a tutorial for in a lot of other places!
Apparently this stuff can be linked to cancer-causing carcinogens, so that would have been nice to know a year ago when I was doing this.
This image is terrifying out of context.
Sunbathing 🤗
And as you can see, the acne gel worked really well!
This is where I left off before picking the restoration back up a year later.
And after a bit of a repaint. 💕
After that, it was time to get a new wig! My favorite shop to get doll wigs is ZaZou Dolls on Etsy. I am not sponsored by them, but I wanted to recommend that shop because I tend to be very particular when it comes to rewigging. A lot of non-AG wigs are very thick and heavy and have a specific shine to them that I'm not fond of (I think it looks a little less realistic), and so far I've had good luck with ZaZou's vegan mohair wigs. All of my current customs use their wigs.
And this is Liam! ✨ I'm really happy with how he turned out! I was originally planning to make him a different character, but once I put the wig on, the character I put together just didn't feel right. As a result, he's currently going through some character development, but I can't wait to use him in my stories!
And that's all for today! I really hope you guys got at least some mild enjoyment from the chaos! I'm going to be a bit busy for a while, so I'm not sure if I'll have the next episode of Cousins out by next Monday. I wanted to give you guys a little post before then in case that were to happen. 😊 Until then, have a great week and remember to eat your veggies! Bye! <3
LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Liam is awesome! How do you rewig? i have wanted to do so for awhile on one my facebook marketplace find dolls but didn't know how to.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much! There are a lot of tutorials that explain rewigging better than I probably can, but essentially, you just have to take off the old wig, which takes a bit of force, so you can use non-acetone nail polish to weaken the glue and a spoon to pry the wig off. After that, you can put the new wig on! (Liam's actually isn't glued on yet, but usually tacky glue works for that.)
DeleteAhh he's so cute! and all doll restoration photos are deeply concerning out of context---especially the eye removal ones. The benzoyl peroxide photo isn't so bad, haha. Fun post!
ReplyDeleteHaha, true! Limb restringing is bad too--- I think I still have the photos from when I restrung my white body Kirsten (I underestimate how many things I take pictures of thinking I'll make a post about it later but never do) and it's very scary to randomly come across those while I'm going through my camera roll.
DeleteThank you!
You did a great job cleaning up and customizing this doll!
ReplyDelete(also, this is how I find out benzoyl peroxide causes cancer? definitely rethinking using that on my FACE!?)
Thank you!
DeleteOmg oh nooo. I'd say probably look at some of the studies for it because I don't know many of the details. ðŸ˜
Liam looks so cute! I'm so excited to see your plans for his character! If I may ask, what was the original character you had planned?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Honestly, I am too haha. He was originally going to be a bookish theater kid, but that just didn't feel like "him" once I put the wig on.
